Oscar Piastri dominates in Miami as McLaren claim a stunning double finish, proving how far they’ve come since their 2023 struggles.
Oscar Piastri extended his incredible run of form with a dominant win at the Miami Grand Prix, marking his fourth victory of the season and third in a row. The McLaren driver now leads his teammate Lando Norris by 16 points in the standings after the team secured an impressive one-two finish in Florida.
“I’m really happy with this win,” Piastri said. “Saturday was tough with the Sprint and one of my hardest qualifying sessions all year, so to come out on top today is something I’m proud of.”
The Australian took control of the race early on after a chaotic first corner and managed to outpace Max Verstappen, pulling away steadily after avoiding a risky defensive move from the Red Bull driver.
“The first corner was messy, but it actually worked in my favor. I stayed clear of Max and could feel right away that we had strong pace. The car was just amazing today,” Piastri added.
His first stint on soft tires laid the foundation for victory. Although he struggled slightly on the hard compound later in the race, he had already built a strong gap and maintained control to the end.
Piastri also took a moment to reflect on McLaren’s dramatic improvement. Just two years ago, the team was lapped at the same circuit.
“It’s hard to believe. Two years ago, we were the slowest car here and got lapped twice. Today, we finished 25 seconds ahead of third place. That shows the incredible work everyone has done at the factory and trackside.”
Lando Norris, who finished second, was less upbeat. His race was compromised by an aggressive move from Verstappen at Turn 2, which pushed him wide and dropped him to sixth on the opening lap.
“It’s frustrating, but the team did an amazing job, so I can’t complain too much,” Norris said. “We nailed the pit stops and had great pace. Oscar drove really well. As for Max—same story, really. He fought hard and I paid the price.”
When asked about being pushed off track by Verstappen more than once, Norris voiced his growing frustration with both the racing and the criticism he faces.
“If I don’t fight, people complain. If I do fight, they still complain. It’s always the same with Max. Either you don’t pass or you crash. I paid for it today, but I’m happy with second.”
