Oscar Piastri shows maturity and speed in Shanghai, converting winter progress into a flawless drive and his third Formula 1 victory.
Piastri’s growth as a Formula 1 driver was on full display in Shanghai, and McLaren team principal Andrea Stella couldn’t be more impressed.
The young Australian clinched his first pole position and secured his third career win at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in his development.
“His racecraft and overall speed have taken a real step forward,” Stella said. “During the race, the questions he asked were sharp and perfectly timed. That kind of awareness is a big part of what we call race technique — and he’s clearly worked hard on it.”
Piastri’s Full-Circle Moment Wows McLaren Boss
Stella revealed that the team put in serious effort over the winter, reviewing past races and identifying key areas for improvement.
“There was a long list of opportunities we looked at — moments where we thought, ‘Next time, we handle this differently.’ That process has paid off,” he explained.
For Stella, the clearest sign of Piastri’s progress came full circle in Shanghai, exactly a year after a tough learning experience at the same circuit.
“I still remember our debrief last year. It was just the two of us, outside the hospitality suite, talking about everything that didn’t go quite right,” he recalled. “We both knew there was a lot to take from that weekend. And now, 12 months later, Oscar came back and delivered. That says everything.”
