McLaren F1 Has Regained Its Leading Edge, Just Over a Year After Its Last Major Challenges.
In Hungary, the papaya team secured the front row for the first time since 2012 and stands a good chance of winning the Grand Prix, slightly edging out Max Verstappen’s Red Bull, which seems challenging at the limit.
Credit for these advancements is often given to Andrea Stella, who has been the team’s director since 2023.
Fernando Alonso, who worked with Stella at Ferrari, praises his leadership: “He’s an incredible person, first and foremost, a great engineer and now a good team director. He’s a great man.”
“And I think for people who are honest and who do things with common sense, normally in life, things go well for them. I think, yes, he’s a great leader. And as I said, it’s probably common sense that defines Andrea Stella. And I’m not surprised he’s doing an incredible job.”
Oscar Piastri, who has been driving under Stella’s command since last year, echoes the Spaniard’s sentiments: “I don’t have as much experience with Andrea in other roles or with other people in Formula 1, but I think we say it all the time at McLaren: he’s an incredible team leader for us.”
“And I think in some ways, because I’m still relatively new, I probably don’t fully appreciate the extent of his leadership and expertise. But even without that experience, it’s clear to me that he’s an incredible person, as Fernando said, and an incredible leader.”
“And I think, firstly, just looking at the team’s results and its turnaround is enough to appreciate him, but on a personal level, for me as a driver and just getting to know Andrea over these 18 months, it’s very clear why we’ve been able to turn around.”
“It’s the empowerment he gives to everyone in the team… I know he doesn’t like to take too much credit for McLaren’s success, but the power he gives to the thousand other people in the team is really incredible. Yes, he’s someone it’s good to have by your side.”
