Piastri Claims McLaren Nearing Victory Amid Setbacks

16/07/2024

Despite setbacks, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri remains hopeful, stating the team is close to achieving a significant victory.

Oscar Piastri is confident that McLaren F1 is ready to regularly win races, and he believes he is at the level to claim his first Formula 1 victory. He reflects on race incidents that have cost his team but believes the foundations are solid.

“We’re ready. The good and bad thing is that it’s never the same reason that has stopped us from winning,” Piastri stated. “At Silverstone, we made a poor decision; at Imola, we had a traffic issue during qualifying, etc.”

“I think it’s a good thing that there hasn’t been a repeated mistake. But yes, I feel there have been quite a few instances, on both sides of the garage, where we felt we could have won the race. I believe we’ve done the hardest part, we have an incredibly fast car, we just need to capitalize on it.”

Piastri isn’t disheartened by losing the race due to the wrong tire choice, as his team has consistently made the right decisions regarding tires: “I think this kind of conditions has always been favorable for us over the past 18 months.”

“I think this year it’s not as clear, but I also think the Mercedes are ahead, they are the ones who see the weather conditions first. But it is clear that we were very strong in these conditions, and I felt very strong.”

“The conditions are incredibly challenging, you have to keep the tires in the right window, you also have to take a lot of risks. And these are conditions I’ve always enjoyed in my career, so yes, I think it’s a combination of a lot of practice.”
