Piastri Eyes Strategic Win

Piastri Targets Strong Start

25/05/2024

Oscar Piastri, McLaren F1 driver, is focused on securing a strategic victory in Monaco, acknowledging the challenges of overtaking in the tight, winding streets of the Principality.

Piastri came close to pole position in Monaco, but the McLaren F1 driver is not disappointed to be starting second on the grid. He admits he didn’t expect to challenge Charles Leclerc, who secured pole position, and believes it would have been difficult to catch the Ferrari driver.

“If you take the second half of my first Q3 lap and the first half of the second, it would have been enough. A few small errors at the end, but Charles has been incredibly fast all weekend, hats off to him. We didn’t think we could get this close. It’s great to be on the front row, we’ve had a good weekend and built some positive momentum,” Piastri said.

When asked what he needs to do to aim for victory, Piastri believes he will either need a better start or to take the lead through strategy. The Australian admits he is not convinced he can overtake on the winding streets of the Principality.

“A good start always helps. If you can take the lead, it’s easy to control here. That’s the first thing, otherwise, it will be down to strategy. I want to be optimistic, but I have to be realistic, and it will be difficult to overtake. We’ll do our best; we’re starting from a good position and have a chance to have a good day tomorrow.”
