Piastri Defends Norris Amid Jones's Harsh Critique

Oscar Piastri responds calmly to Alan Jones’s remarks, backing Lando Norris and insisting every driver manages pressure in their own way.

Oscar Piastri has responded to sharp remarks made by fellow Australian and former F1 World Champion Alan Jones, who recently questioned Lando Norris’s mental resilience.

Piastri currently leads his McLaren teammate by 10 points in the drivers’ standings, following back-to-back victories. While Piastri has now claimed three wins this season, Norris has managed just one, struggling at times to maximize the potential of the MCL39 when it matters most.

Norris has been openly self-critical in the media, a trait that led Jones to suggest he lacks the mental toughness needed at the highest level. When asked about those comments in Miami, Piastri offered a calm, thoughtful perspective.

“For me, the most important thing is doing things in a way that feels natural,” he said. “When you start acting against your nature, that’s when things get complicated. That’s when things go wrong.”

Piastri emphasized that there’s no single correct approach to handling pressure in Formula 1.

“Everyone deals with things differently. I think Lando handles it very differently from me,” he said. “But whether it’s visible or not, we all go through a lot emotionally. That’s just part of being human, and part of being a competitor.”

He added that emotional responses and coping mechanisms vary from person to person. “There’s no right or wrong way. It’s a personal thing. I’m probably at the other end of the spectrum compared to Lando, but that doesn’t make one of us right and the other wrong.”

“What matters is what helps you recharge and perform at your best. Lando knows himself better than anyone else. If his way helps him move forward, then that deserves respect.”
