Oscar Piastri believes McLaren is in a strong position but remains cautious, stressing uncertainty about rivals’ true performance ahead of Melbourne.
Private testing is over, and drivers are now eagerly awaiting the Australian Grand Prix.
This is especially true for local hero Oscar Piastri, who feels his McLaren is ready to fight for victories from the start of the season. He is targeting a strong result in Melbourne and, beyond that, much more over the course of the year.
“I think I have everything I need to fight!” Piastri responds when asked about his impressions of the MCL39 in Sakhir.
“We worked hard this winter, and I’m happy with how we’ve prepared for this year. I have everything at my disposal, and I’ll try to make the most of it.”
And he, too, is ready.
“I was happy with my 2024 season. I proved that I could compete at the highest level on my best days, but the goal this year is to be more consistent.”
However, Piastri acknowledges that drawing major conclusions from just a few hours of running over three days is difficult.
“We know where we stand. But we have to be cautious. Our first five races last year were very different from how we finished the season. We test so many things, and we don’t know what the others are doing. I think we’re in a good position, but it’s impossible to say exactly where everyone stands before the first race in Melbourne.”
