Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri both endorse Gabriel Bortoleto’s impressive F1

Verstappen Urges Sauber: Sign Rising Star Bortoleto Now

03/11/2024

Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri both endorse Gabriel Bortoleto’s impressive F1 potential, urging Sauber to consider his talent.

Gabriel Bortoleto, the Brazilian junior driver for McLaren, stands as one of Sauber’s top options for 2025.

According to rumours circulating in the Interlagos paddock, Bortoleto and McLaren may have already reached an agreement with Sauber / Audi F1, though it has yet to be finalised.

Could the current F2 leader make his move to F1 next year? Max Verstappen certainly believes it would be well-deserved.

“Yes, and I mean, if I were Sauber, I would have already signed him. The future lies with young drivers, after all. And with the major regulatory shift coming in 2026, it’s always beneficial to familiarise oneself with a team over a year, to make some mistakes, settle in well, and gain a good understanding of the car. You always feel much more prepared and comfortable, and he’d be in excellent shape when 2026 begins.”

Oscar Piastri, who knows Bortoleto well from his regular presence in the McLaren F1 garage, admits to being impressed.

“He’s done an incredibly impressive job. Obviously, he won F3 as a rookie last year and now leads the F2 championship. So yes, from my perspective, when you achieve those kinds of results, you deserve to be in F1.”

“And I know personally the frustration of not getting a seat straight after F2, so for his sake, I hope he doesn’t have to go through that. I don’t think anyone will ever experience as tough a period as I did, but I think he’s done exceptionally well. On merit, he deserves his place in F1.”
