Russell and Piastri celebrate the rise of talent in F1, highlighting the shift towards merit and team support over financial backing.
Formula 1 is thriving financially, and the rise of successful driver academies has significantly elevated the level of competition on the grid. George Russell is proud to see that money is no longer the central factor for teams when choosing drivers, with talent taking precedence over financial backing.
“It’s probably the most competitive grid we’ve ever had in Formula 1,” Russell said. “Everyone is here on merit. The sport has never been stronger, so there’s no need for external resources that some drivers used to bring in the past.”
Russell also stressed that it’s now up to the sport and the FIA to help nurture young talent from the very beginning, especially given the high costs of karting and Formula 4. “It’s no secret that these disciplines are incredibly expensive. We need to ensure that talent can emerge from an early age, and it shouldn’t just be those with the financial resources between the ages of seven and seventeen who get the chance.”
Oscar Piastri echoed Russell’s thoughts, highlighting the role of team support in the success of modern F1 drivers: “I think I’m echoing what George said. Compared to previous generations, talent is the most important thing you need today.”
“In the past, it wasn’t always like this. Other factors played a bigger role. As George mentioned, the path to F1 is still very much about being in the right place at the right time to climb the ranks. Ultimately, you have to be good enough to replace someone on the grid.”
The current F1 grid is notably young, making it harder than ever to break through. However, Piastri believes that talent is now the key to reaching F1, even without significant financial backing. “The support from F1 teams has never been more crucial,” he added. “With cost caps now in place, it’s a positive step. Almost every team can secure the funding they need for development, without relying on drivers to bring in money. So, yes, I believe the sport is in a very strong position.”
