Oscar Piastri, hailed as a rising star, embraces comparisons to F1 legend Alain Prost, finding similarities in their driving styles.
Oscar Piastri is flattered by the recent praise for his talent and potential, coming from highly influential figures lately.
Just this week, although it’s Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris who holds the best chances of claiming the 2024 title, former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone praised the 23-year-old McLaren driver.
“This Australian, I believe, is a magical guy. He would undoubtedly be world champion within the next two years if the car continues to perform as it is. He really stands out from all the others.”
It’s no surprise Ecclestone is a fan of Piastri, given the Australian has often been compared to Alain Prost—the driver Ecclestone frequently names as the greatest F1 driver of all time.
“It’s a comparison that honors me, especially because Alain was one of the most successful drivers in our sport,” Piastri responds.
“I wasn’t even alive when he was racing, so I don’t have a full picture, but from what I hear or read about him, I see similarities between us.”
“Prost had a very smooth and complete driving style. He was extremely precise in his work. I can see that in myself too, and from what people say about my work.”
Piastri knows four-time world champion Prost personally, as they worked together at Alpine just a few years before the Australian made his F1 debut.
“I spoke with him several times when I was still at Alpine,” Piastri confirms. “It was incredibly interesting to talk with him, and he also gave me some advice.”
One of those tips might have been about minimizing accidents and incidents, as Prost once admitted he only drove a car at 99.9% of its maximum potential.
“That’s not quite the case anymore,” Piastri insists. “In our era, you always have to drive on the limit.”
“When Prost was racing, the cars were less reliable and less safe, so going over the limit had far greater consequences than it does today. But you still can’t ride the curbs every lap.”
“Today, it’s about hitting the limit precisely. If you’re a tenth below, you’re too slow. If you go over it, the tires punish you. It’s a fine line.”
