Fernando Alonso faces ongoing physical challenges, navigating pain and setbacks as he recovers from his São Paulo Grand Prix ordeal.
Alonso prepares for a setback in his recovery after what he described as a “nightmarish” São Paulo Grand Prix.
Fernando arrived late in Brazil after returning to Europe following the Mexican Grand Prix to treat an intestinal infection with specialist care, missing the media day for the second consecutive week.
The Aston Martin driver later reported severe lower back pain in the closing minutes of the race.
Over team radio, Alonso informed his team that he would finish the race solely as a thank-you to the mechanics who had rebuilt his car on Sunday morning after his qualifying crash.
Since then, he has hinted that his recovery period following the weekend would involve some setbacks.
“There was a lot of bouncing and porpoising in the second half of the race, but I don’t know why, so it was tough on track, and we dropped out of the points.”
“As I said, in different circumstances, I probably would have retired, but the mechanics did an incredible job before the race to get the car back on the grid, so I had to finish it for them, but it was tough.”
Alonso remains tight-lipped about the nature of his physical issues, particularly those related to his intestinal condition that required a challenging round trip to Europe. When questioned, he declined to elaborate.
“It was painful, that’s all I can say. And before this race, there was a lot of preparation on my part—many checks, a lot of hard work, plenty of physio, and consultations with doctors to make it here to Brazil.”
“It was a tremendous commitment to come here and drive a car that couldn’t compete with the others. All the checks were done, and I’ve been making sure of everything these past few days with a lot of effort.”
“After this race, my body will certainly need a setback over the next few days. I’ll have to rest and make the most of the brief pause before Las Vegas.”
