Perez's Q2 Grip Shock Out Before Q3

Perez’s Q2 Grip Shock: Out Before Q3

18/05/2024

Sergio Perez’s unexpected grip trouble in Q2 led to his elimination before Q3 at Imola. The Red Bull driver will now start the race from 11th position.

Sergio Pérez couldn’t manage his Red Bull RB20 as effectively as Max Verstappen, who secured pole position at Imola.

The Mexican driver didn’t secure a spot near his teammate and was eliminated in Q2, meaning he will start from 11th place.

“We made a lot of adjustments to the car’s setup. Before qualifying, with small margins in Q1, I had a bad start because I had a poor lap, but it turned out we were safe at the end.”

“This meant we started Q2 with worn tires. Once we put on new tires for the second run, I surprisingly gained a lot of rear grip and got caught out.”

“Entering the seventh corner, I went straight and lost two and a half tenths.”

“I think we made good progress with the car, as Max showed, but unfortunately on my side, I couldn’t demonstrate it in Q3.”

“I believe if we can score a good number of points tomorrow and minimize the damage, it will be very important.”

Regarding his off-track excursion this morning (photo below), he downplays the incident.

“Nothing serious, the car wasn’t too damaged. Sorry to the mechanics for the extra work. But it shows the car remains nervous. It will be better in the race with the more appropriate settings we applied before qualifying.”
