Gasly reveals Pérez’s struggles are due to a lack of connection with his car, undermining his confidence.
Sergio Pérez is facing a tough situation at Red Bull, scoring only 11 points over the last five races while his teammate has amassed nearly 100. Pierre Gasly, who has previously been part of the Austrian team alongside Max Verstappen, doesn’t know the specific issue affecting Pérez currently, but the Alpine F1 driver does not believe the Mexican’s talent has disappeared.
“First of all, I think my situation was very different from Checo’s,” Gasly stated. “But I think at the moment, he’s under a lot of pressure. I really don’t know what to say to be fair.”
“He’s a good driver, everyone knows that, but it seems he can’t seem to recover at the moment, whether it’s him or it’s coming from the team. I don’t know, and I really can’t make any comments about it.”
The Frenchman describes the difficulties that can arise when a driver lacks confidence and comfort: “Ultimately, his problem right now is that he doesn’t feel the car. Every time you feel good in a car, you have, for one reason or another, an off weekend.”
“The following weekend, you come back, you feel good, you put in good laps, and you don’t even think about it. The next weekend, you come back, you feel good, you put in good laps, and you don’t even think about it. But clearly, there’s something missing right now between the two.”
