Sergio Perez could make a surprise F1 comeback with Cadillac as the American giant eyes a strong debut in 2026.
While the road to entry has been anything but smooth, Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko believes the arrival of the iconic American brand is ultimately a win for the sport.
“When a global automotive giant like General Motors, with such a historic name, enters F1, it’s a positive step,” said Marko. “Back when I was young, Cadillac was the ultimate dream car. Now they’re aiming to rebuild that prestige through motorsport.”
And they might not need years to get up to speed.
“Cadillac could be competitive right away,” Marko added. “GM already has ties to Ferrari, and they’ll be using Ferrari engines. What’ll be interesting is how they handle the split between their UK headquarters and the engine facility in North Carolina.”
On the driver front, Sergio Perez — who parted ways with Red Bull at the end of last season — is strongly rumored to be on Cadillac’s radar. F1 legend Mario Andretti has voiced his interest in the Mexican driver, and Perez himself seems open to a comeback.
Asked whether Perez still has what it takes, Marko was cautiously optimistic.
“If he’s mentally recovered from the Verstappen pressure and is fully motivated — then yes,” Marko said. “He’s hugely popular across Latin America, and that matters too. I just spoke to him recently. He’s in a good place and enjoying life. But for a team like Cadillac, having an experienced driver could be key.”
