Sergio Perez has dismissed rumors of an impending retirement, confirming his commitment to race with the team in 2025.
Sergio Pérez reaffirmed his commitment to 2025 after posting a playful message on social media during the break, where he used a clip from the movie The Wolf of Wall Street to declare that he wasn’t leaving.
Indeed, rumors had resurfaced suggesting he might announce his retirement at his home Grand Prix in Mexico. With just over a week to go before that race, which follows Austin, Pérez continues to deny such claims.
“My home race is coming up, and I want to make a clear statement. I’m 100% certain I’ll be with this team next year. I have a signed contract, and everything else doesn’t concern me.”
“Right now, all my thoughts are focused on solving the current car issues.”
“Sometimes people mix up information, and with the Mexican Grand Prix approaching, I didn’t want my fans to misunderstand.”
“I wanted them to know that I’ll be here next year by contract, and it’s not on my mind,” Pérez smiled, uncertain of what to expect this weekend in terms of performance.
“It’s rather an unknown because we seem to have a correlation issue in the wind tunnel. We don’t really know, we don’t have the figures, but we just want to get back on track, and this will be a good circuit to try. If we succeed, our championship can get back on the right path.”
The Mexican driver also praised the rise of young talents in Formula 1 this year: “It’s good to see new drivers coming in and being competitive right away. They arrive much more prepared than when I started. They’ve been with the teams for a long time, attended many races, and quickly get up to speed.”
However, Dr. Helmut Marko continued to apply pressure on Pérez in the paddock on Thursday. He is reportedly pushing internally to replace Pérez with Lawson in 2025.
“With Checo, the big issue is his inconsistency. But I don’t want to say more on that. Let’s see how he performs here with the upgrades. That’s my main concern.”
Marko is not only concerned about Perez’s form but also about the possibility that the team’s next major departure could be Max Verstappen.
Rumors suggest efforts might be underway to attract Oscar Piastri as a potential replacement if needed.
“For now, we are solely focused on securing this world championship,” Marko responded when asked about the Piastri rumor, without denying it.
“Our performance next year will depend on it, as our car won’t change fundamentally. Max has a contract with Red Bull, but as I’ve mentioned several times, there are exit clauses. Let’s see how things develop.”
“But if the car and the environment don’t suit him, he could say ‘That’s it!’—and that’s a reality we also need to be prepared for.”
