Sergio Perez unveils Red Bull Racing’s distinctive approach to assessing driver performance, contrasting sharply with other F1 teams.
Sergio Perez explained that the way Red Bull measures its drivers’ performance is “different from the rest,” which is why he understands why many drivers haven’t “made it” within the team.
Historically, Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly were demoted to Toro Rosso during the season, while Alex Albon didn’t last very long against Max Verstappen.
Thus, Perez became the first non-junior Red Bull driver to join the team since Mark Webber in 2007 when he replaced Albon in 2021.
But with his extensive Formula 1 experience, Perez knows that pressure is always nearby. Having driven for Sauber, McLaren, Force India, and Racing Point, he believes that Red Bull’s evaluation method for its drivers is distinct from other teams on the grid.
“There’s always pressure in Formula 1; we must remember we’re at the pinnacle of the sport.”
“So, pressure is a given, always needing to perform under all conditions, in every race, it’s standard.”
“But at Red Bull, it’s definitely a bit different. I mean, there’s a reason why many drivers haven’t made it because the level of pressure, the focus on oneself, it’s not measured the same across all teams – and I feel that the way they measure at Red Bull is unlike anywhere else.”
Despite this, he hasn’t let the pressure or even criticisms from his own bosses or social media get to him.
“I think I’m privileged, being a bit older and having grown up without social media. It can be very toxic, so I’m not a big fan of that, and I always try to stay away from it. So I focus on what the team tells me, which is a few people, not millions.”
“Ensuring I can stay in F1, do my job, give it my all, prepare as best as I can, that’s all I can do.”
“I can try a thousand times… How to say… in the end, the most important thing is to work with your team, to try to deliver the expected result. External noise will always be there, and you can do nothing about it. But it’s crucial to ensure you’re able to stop it before it gets into your brain.”
