Perez Insists No Rivalry with Lawson Amid Red Bull Tensions

Perez Dismisses Ego Battle with Lawson for Red Bull Seat

31/10/2024

Perez denies tension with Lawson for Red Bull seat, stressing harmony post-Mexican GP discussions on their on-track clash.

Sergio Perez has denied that his clash with Liam Lawson at the Mexican Formula 1 Grand Prix stemmed from an ego battle with the RB F1 driver vying for his seat at Red Bull.

Lawson raised his middle finger as he overtook Perez’s Red Bull RB20, and the Mexican was outspoken after the race, criticising the New Zealander’s behaviour as lacking humility. Perez went so far as to suggest that Lawson did not possess the “right attitude” for Formula 1.

When asked if his opinion had changed over the week, Perez said in Brazil: “For me, it’s obviously in the heat of the moment.”

“Now, we’ve had a bit of time to let it sink in.”

“All I can say is that the race was looking promising for both of us at that moment. Being on the alternate strategy, it was the early stages of the race.”

“There were big opportunities, and I think it wasn’t necessary to collide.”

After urging Red Bull’s management to address the conflict with Lawson, Perez remains firm that all parties are now aligned to prevent a recurrence.

“We were all in agreement on this. We all felt the same way. We lost a lot of points for ourselves.”

“When you look at where Piastri finished, and he was far behind me, it gives you an idea of how far I could have come back without any damage.”

“We looked quite quick. We definitely lost crucial points, and ultimately, that’s what really matters.”

Lawson’s return to the F1 grid has been viewed as an audition for a potential promotion within Red Bull’s ranks, following a disappointing season for Perez.

However, Perez argued that Lawson’s collision with Fernando Alonso in the United States proves that his rival’s aggressiveness is unrelated to ambitions within Red Bull.

“I don’t think this is an ego battle with me. When you look at the races and the number of incidents he’s had, I don’t think this is related to the Red Bull seat or anything of the sort.”
