Pérez brushes off media pressure, eyes long-term Red Bull stay

Pérez unfazed by exit rumours, vows to finish with Red Bull

20/10/2024

Sergio Pérez dismisses speculation about his future, reaffirming his commitment to Red Bull amidst ongoing media-driven rumours.

After his crash during qualifying in Budapest, Sergio Pérez found himself under more scrutiny than ever. Some speculated he wouldn’t even make it through the summer break.

And yet, not only is the Mexican driver still in the Red Bull seat, but he has also been extended for next year.

“I’ve been through this so many times,” Pérez reflects today in GQ.

As fresh rumours about his retirement swirl—rumours he has denied—Sergio Pérez remains firm in his stance: he intends to stay with Red Bull in the medium term.

“I know them well [the journalists]. I know how they try to apply pressure. They like to get that soundbite.”

“That’s how sport works. You have one or two bad races, and suddenly, there’s a lot of negative talk about you, and so on. But it’s also part of the team culture—at Red Bull. The chatter, the contract negotiations, it’s all just part of the game.”

Has Sergio Pérez, however, not considered leaving Milton Keynes for a team where he could be the leader? Where the pressure might be less intense?

“When I thought about it, I realised I really enjoy the challenge I have at Red Bull. It’s a huge challenge to be Max’s teammate. It’s a challenge that, essentially, prepares you for everything. So, I told myself I want to spend the latter part of my career at the top, right where the pressure is at its highest.”

“At the end of the day, when you go through a tough period, there’s a lot of talk,” he added.

“But in the end, 90% of the grid would have loved to have my career.”

“When you’re a driver, all you think about is the next race—the next challenge, the next category, the next contract. It’s always ‘the next Grand Prix, the next one, the next one.’ Sometimes, it’s good to step back and remember how far you’ve come. It’s a brutal sport.”

Even after his Q1 crash at the Hungaroring, did Sergio Pérez not consider seeking other options?

“I had already made up my mind to stay,” he asserted.

“It was mainly speculation. The priority is to get our season back on track. It’s not about contracts.”

“The most important thing is not to give up or fall into a comfort zone. Whether in good times or bad, riding the waves is what matters most. That’s the only way to have a successful career in this sport.”

“There’s no other way.”
