Verstappen Admits Red Bull’s RB20 Lacks Pace at Zandvoort

23/08/2024

Verstappen acknowledges Red Bull’s RB20 struggles at Zandvoort, expressing concerns over pace while Pérez and the team search for answers to improve their performance ahead of the weekend.

Max Verstappen placed second in the first free practice session of the Dutch Grand Prix, before slipping to fifth in FP2. The Red Bull driver isn’t overly concerned yet, but he acknowledges that his team is currently lacking overall performance.

“FP1 didn’t offer much running time, but FP2 gave us a clearer picture. We’re a bit slow on the quick laps and also on the long runs. We have some work to do, and although we don’t have a clear answer at the moment, we’ll keep searching. We’re just a bit slow,” Verstappen admitted.

He also confirmed that this lack of pace isn’t unexpected, though he remains hopeful for improvements over the weekend: “This is where we’ve been for the last few races, so it’s not a surprise. We’re simply trying to find more performance for Sunday.”

Sergio Pérez, meanwhile, failed to finish in the top 10 on this first day, but he noted that Red Bull put in a tremendous amount of groundwork and now needs to analyse everything to find solutions that will enable him to make progress.

“We tested some things, and I think it’s slightly better, but I made a mistake in Turn 12 and lost a few tenths. We’ve got work to do, especially on the long runs, to match the teams ahead of us. We’ve run the cars in very different conditions, so we have a big day ahead,” Pérez remarked.

This was also the first Grand Prix day with his new race engineer, and the Mexican is confident about the continuation of their collaboration, which is set to last for four races: “It’s new for all of us to have Woody as the engineer, but things will get better with each session, and we’ll get used to it.”
