Patricio O’Ward admits frustration as McLaren F1 thrives, feeling sidelined while others shine. The Mexican is eager for his long-awaited opportunity.
Patricio O’Ward, representing McLaren in IndyCar, welcomes McLaren F1’s success with the 2024 Constructors’ Championship title. The Mexican has often served as the third driver in recent years and admits feeling frustrated at not getting his chance and seeing that he is not on the list.
“It’s cool to see the team win the Constructors’ Championship and everything else. I was happy to at least be a ‘small crumb’ of it,” O’Ward said. “But it’s quite tough because it’s like going to a buffet without being able to eat. Everyone is eating and enjoying themselves, and you’re just there.”
“You can’t do what you love, and you have to watch others do it. I’m at a stage in my career where I’m giving it my all, and I’ve been all-in for so long for this Formula 1 opportunity to come, but there’s always a deadline. There will always be a point where it’s just… ‘that’s enough,’ because it might never happen.”
O’Ward implies that he will not wait more than a year to see if his performances open up opportunities, even though securing a seat alongside Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will be difficult.
“I’m not open to continuing for another five years. I think there’s a deadline, and it’s coming sooner rather than later. I’m giving everything I have this year and hope my opportunities will keep growing.”
“I’d say we’ve reached a point where my role has become quite intense in terms of attending all the F1 races in remote locations, and I want to drive the car. I want to drive the car. I want to be in the car. I hope this becomes increasingly significant to balance out all the days spent doing the dirty work during the off-season, rather than what you truly love.”
