Oscar Piastri Reveals the Secret Behind His 2025 Breakout

Oscar Piastri credits winter work on qualifying performance as the key factor behind his impressive surge to the top this season.

Piastri has revealed that focusing on one specific area during the winter made all the difference to his performance this season.

The Australian driver credits his qualifying improvements as a major reason behind his strong start, after taking the lead in the Drivers’ Championship for the first time in his career. Piastri is the only driver to have won multiple races this season. After securing his third victory of the year in Saudi Arabia, he now sits at the top of the standings.

At the start of the season, Piastri was slightly behind teammate Lando Norris, who had taken a win and a podium in the first two races, making him an early favorite for the title. Since then, Piastri has been in outstanding form, winning two of the last three Grands Prix and finishing on the podium in the third.

Looking back, Piastri believes the biggest step forward has come in qualifying. In just his third Formula 1 season, the 24-year-old has already taken two pole positions this year.

“I think the hard work we put in over the winter really paid off,” he said. “I have felt much more comfortable in qualifying and it definitely feels like I have taken a step forward.”

“Last year, I was not far off, but I still had some areas to improve. This year, while I have had a couple of average qualifying sessions by my standards, overall the level has been much higher.”

“It took a lot of detailed work in many areas, trying to find those last few tenths of a second, and I believe that effort has shown in the results.”

At McLaren, there is no designated number one driver. This makes qualifying even more critical for both Piastri and Norris, something Piastri openly acknowledges.

“Qualifying is extremely important. Regardless of how the team dynamics play out with strategies and pit stops, having track position and clean air is crucial. You always need to be as far up the grid as possible.”

“Starting ahead gives a huge advantage, especially when both drivers are in similar machinery and pushing each other to the limit. Good qualifying sessions will be key, but as we have seen, it is not everything. The team must also ensure fairness in strategy and opportunities.”

“This year, the situation feels very different. We already have a strong lead in the Constructors’ Championship, and now both Lando and I are fighting for the Drivers’ title.”

“We must make sure that both cars are equally competitive every weekend. Whenever we can maintain equality and give both drivers the same chance to win, that is exactly what we should do.”
