Oscar Piastri lifts the lid on how he controls intense emotions during races, revealing the hidden battles behind his composed image.
McLaren F1 driver Oscar Piastri says he does not suppress his emotions but has learned how to manage them.
Often seen as cool and composed, especially when compared to his teammate Lando Norris, Piastri revealed that his calm appearance is not just natural but also the result of conscious work.
“I have definitely been emotional at times throughout my career,” Piastri admitted. “When there are negative emotions, they tend to have a negative impact. Staying calm and trying to stay relaxed comes naturally to me, but there has also been a lot of deliberate effort behind it.”
The Australian explained that staying composed in public often means not showing what he feels when the cameras are rolling. He also uses the team radio carefully, choosing his moments.
“There are positive emotions too,” he said. “After the race in China, if you had seen my face on camera, you would have noticed I was incredibly excited.”
“There are always emotions involved. The radio has a button for a reason, and you use it when you feel you need to. There are probably a lot of things people don’t see under the helmet. But for me, that is just part of how I handle it.”
