British talent Arvid Lindblad receives an FIA Super Licence ahead of turning 18, opening the door to a potential F1 debut.
The FIA World Motor Sport Council has announced that Arvid Lindblad has been granted a Super Licence, allowing him to compete in Formula 1 if called upon by Red Bull or Racing Bulls.
This could occur in the event of Max Verstappen receiving a race ban. Should Liam Lawson or Isack Hadjar step in for the Dutchman, Lindblad could be called up by Racing Bulls.
Lindblad was not initially eligible, as he will only turn 18 at the beginning of August — normally a strict requirement for obtaining the Super Licence that grants access to Formula 1. This decision will also allow him to take part in Free Practice 1 sessions this year in one of the four cars owned by the energy drink giant.
“The FIA received a request for a Super Licence to be granted to Arvid Lindblad before his 18th birthday,” reads the press release from the World Motor Sport Council, which also approved the 2026 F1 calendar.
“After reviewing the information provided in support of this request, the World Council determined that the driver has recently and consistently demonstrated exceptional ability and maturity in competition relevant to Formula 1 and therefore approved the request.”
In June 2024, the FIA added an exception to the Super Licence regulations, stating that if a 17-year-old driver were deemed fit by the federation, they could be allowed an early promotion to the top tier. While this rule was initially designed to support Andrea Kimi Antonelli, it is ultimately Lindblad who benefits from it.
