General Motors secures FIA approval to build engines for Cadillac’s F1 team, marking a bold American step into Formula 1’s future.

The FIA has officially greenlit GM Performance Power Units LLC—a joint venture between General Motors and TWG Motorsports—as an approved engine supplier for the Formula 1 World Championship starting in 2029. The move clears the way for Cadillac’s full technical entry into F1.

Cadillac will join the Formula 1 grid in 2026, initially using Ferrari power units before switching to GM-built engines once they are homologated for competition.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem commented on the milestone, saying,

“Over two years ago, the FIA opened the door for an 11th team in Formula 1, driven by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity into the sport. Today’s progress shows the journey has been worth it.”

He continued,

“Welcoming GM Performance Power Units as a future engine supplier is a major step in F1’s global expansion. It reflects the growing interest from world-class manufacturers like General Motors, whose commitment to innovation, sustainability, and high-level competition aligns perfectly with the FIA’s vision for the sport’s future. This also supports our mission to make motorsport more inclusive and technologically advanced, while reaching a broader, more diverse global fanbase.”

Earlier this year, Russ O’Blenes was appointed CEO of GM Performance Power Units LLC. In a statement following the FIA’s approval, O’Blenes said,

“This is a huge moment for us. With the FIA’s approval, we can now push forward with bringing a truly American-made F1 engine to the grid.”

Development of Cadillac’s prototype Formula 1 engine is ongoing. GM also announced plans to open a dedicated facility for GM Performance Power Units near its Charlotte Technical Center, with operations expected to begin in 2026.
