Albon and Lawson face penalties in Miami, losing valuable points after the stewards review key incidents during the F1 Sprint race.
Penalties keep coming, with Alex Albon and Liam Lawson both receiving five-second penalties after the Miami Sprint.
The race stewards reviewed the case, hearing from car 23’s driver (Alexander Albon), the team’s representative, and analyzing the timing, telemetry, and onboard footage.
Albon had set times below the minimum threshold recorded in the ECU in three consecutive sectors at the start of the safety car period. This violated article 55.7 of the Sporting Regulations, leading to the standard penalty being applied.
The stewards acknowledged that track conditions were far from perfect, though no incidents had been reported.
As for the incident between Lawson and Alonso, the stewards concluded that Lawson had also lost his points with a five-second penalty. According to the stewards, Lawson was not ahead of Alonso when he attempted to pass the Aston Martin.
Lawson’s front end was not sufficiently ahead of Alonso’s car, meaning Alonso was under no obligation to leave space on the outside and was within his rights to defend as he did. Lawson should have backed off and braked, rather than staying alongside, ultimately making contact with his rival. He also received a penalty point on his license.
Earlier in the race, Oliver Bearman was already penalized (see here). With this latest penalty, Albon loses his hard-earned 4th place and exits the points, as does Lawson. Meanwhile, Russell, Stroll, and Tsunoda all move up, along with Antonelli, who earns two points, and Gasly, who takes one.
