Mercedes F1 pledges support for Esteban Ocon, seeking optimal opportunities for his career, amid silence on further plans.
Mercedes F1 has confirmed Esteban Ocon’s statement that he remains part of the German brand’s Formula 1 driver development program.
Long before Alpine announced the French driver would leave the team at the end of the year, Ocon—also personally managed by Toto Wolff—maintained he was “still a Mercedes junior driver in his mind.”
As the 27-year-old now seeks to sustain his F1 career, Le Mag Sport Auto asked Mercedes if Ocon was an option to partner with George Russell next year.
“No official comment to give on that—as you can imagine, we do not comment on every speculation that arises!”
“What I can say is that Esteban continues to be supported by Mercedes, and we will work with him to ensure the best opportunity for the next phase of his career.”
To date, Ocon has two clear paths: the Audi F1 project, though Carlos Sainz appears to be the German manufacturer’s priority, and Haas F1. It’s not ruled out that Ocon might choose Haas even if Sainz goes to Williams, as the Audi project, despite being based on the Sauber framework, carries many uncertainties for medium-term success.
