Ocon Exits Alpine Over Persistent Weaknesses

Ocon Leaves Alpine After Three Years of Stagnation

25/07/2024

Esteban Ocon parts ways with Alpine F1, citing long-standing issues and lack of team progress.

Esteban Ocon, recently confirmed at Haas F1 for 2025, revealed that Alpine F1’s failure to address longstanding technical weaknesses influenced his decision to leave the team for the next season.

The Frenchman began considering his departure as early as mid-season 2023, a turbulent period marked by the ousting of Laurent Rossi, Otmar Szafnauer, and Alan Permane.

“There have obviously been a lot of discussions in the paddock. It’s quite clear. My conversation with Haas started quite some time ago. It was in mid-2023 that things really began, when the troubled period started at Alpine.”

Ocon disclosed that he had chosen to leave Alpine a year ago, reflecting on the performance factors that motivated his decision.

“These weaknesses have been troubling Alpine for three years and are still present on our 2024 F1 car. The decision for me was quite clear.”

“I decided quite some time ago that I wanted a new challenge. I wanted to write my story—my own story—and obviously, five years in Formula 1 with the same team is long in Formula 1 terms.”

“We have achieved good things, we have faced tougher times as well.”

“This season has certainly been frustrating. It’s no secret, no one within the team is happy with our situation and there hasn’t been sufficient improvement on some issues, on some technical problems, as we had managed to do years ago.”

“We have not yet reached the stage of technical development and improvement of a top team and we are facing the same problems we had three years ago with the current car, which is not possible in Formula 1.”

“However, I wish the best for this team. It is a team that will forever be in my heart. I have achieved, and we have achieved together, my first podium, my first victory, and that will always hold a special place in my heart.”

“I wish them the best for the future, but before that, we still have half the season left to complete and I hope to do my best to finish on a high with this team.”
