Lando Norris surprises at the Chinese GP, clinching second despite expecting to trail the Ferraris.
Lando Norris finished in a surprising second place at the Chinese Grand Prix, as McLaren F1 expected to struggle in Shanghai. The Briton perfectly took advantage of the safety cars to pit and slot in between the Red Bulls at the finish.
“I’m surprised but happy for the team, everyone deserves it with good pit stops. I wasn’t expecting this kind of race but I was comfortable managing the tires. I was able to push, the car was good and it’s a good day, I scored good points and I’m on the podium so I’m happy,” Norris said.
“I was surprised by several things, the lack of pace from Ferrari, our good pace, and especially against the Red Bulls, which was surprising. I expected to pit early and not be on the podium but it’s a good thing! Everyone is working hard and it pays off.”
The driver, who was voted Driver of the Day by the fans, thought he would finish well behind the Ferraris and was surprised, as he revealed he had made a bet on how many seconds behind the Ferraris he would finish the race. He ended up finishing the race between the Red Bulls, far ahead of the Scuderia drivers.
“I had made a bet on how far behind the Ferraris we would finish, I bet 35 seconds and I was totally wrong! I’m happy to have been wrong in my bet and it’s a good day for everyone.”
