Lando Norris tempers expectations, insisting McLaren isn’t the clear favorite and warning rivals not to overlook Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes.
Lando Norris is keeping things real ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, shutting down the idea that McLaren has a clear edge over its rivals.
During media day in Melbourne, the British driver acknowledged that being seen as a favorite “makes sense” but warned against overhyping McLaren’s pace.
“I know people have big expectations, and that’s all everyone is talking about. But honestly, my only race simulation run seems to have convinced everyone we have a huge advantage.”
He clarified that while his race sim was strong, it happened under ideal conditions.
“Oscar [Piastri] did the same test the next day, but he was much slower—not because he drove worse, but because the track conditions were way slower.”
Norris seemed surprised by how quickly assumptions were made.
“It’s funny to see so many people jump to conclusions before the season even starts. But hey, everyone wants to play the underdog card.”
Despite the noise, Norris says McLaren is staying focused.
“It’s nice that people are talking about us. It’s great publicity, so thanks to them!”
Ferrari: The Dark Horse?
When it comes to the competition, Norris isn’t ruling anyone out—especially Ferrari.
“I feel like we’re on the same level as the top three teams.”
“I still think we’re in the top four, but there are things people haven’t noticed. Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari all looked incredibly strong in certain areas.”
He even hinted that Ferrari could be the surprise package in Melbourne.
“I know how much fuel Ferrari had during testing. People might be shocked by how fast they’ll be this weekend. We’ve kept a low profile, stayed focused, and we want to be at the top. But I don’t think it will be by the huge margin everyone expects.”
McLaren might be in the mix, but according to Norris, this fight is far from one-sided.
