Lando Norris believes Alpine or Aston Martin could claim Grand Prix victories this year, thanks to stable regulations tightening the competitive gaps in F1.
What if other teams—besides Mercedes F1, Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren—were fighting for victory this year? What if the 2025 season became one of the closest in history?
This is one of the predictions—or even concerns—expressed by Lando Norris, the reigning vice-champion, as the new season approaches. With regulatory stability and the end of a regulation cycle, the McLaren F1 driver expects to fight for every podium place.
“I think everyone anticipates this situation in F1,” said the Briton.
“Every year the rules don’t change, every time regulations remain the same, the gaps narrow—it’s always how it works.”
“It was already very close at the end of last season. I think we had already started to see the midfield closing in, the second half of the grid outside the top four teams. The other six teams—we could already see them getting closer and closer.”
“I expect it to be a very tight competition throughout the season.”
Could we then see drivers like Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, or Pierre Gasly winning races this year? That’s the scenario Norris envisions.
“So, I think this year we will probably see winners who are not part of the top four teams, who are not McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, or Red Bull, and I think that’s a good thing for Formula 1 and for the fans. It’s good for the whole sport.”
So, an exciting season lies ahead! And it will be all the more important to enjoy it, as next year, with the changes to engine and chassis regulations, the gaps on the grid are expected to widen, Lando Norris laments.
“It’s a shame that everything changes in 2026 because I expect a great season, a tough one for everyone. So, I’m looking forward to it because I think it won’t just be the usual battle.”
“It will be a bit different this year, and maybe not right from the start, but as the season progresses, the gaps will close even more. It will be good for you, for me, and for everyone watching.”
