Norris Gains McLaren’s Support Against Verstappen’s Dominance

Stella admits the challenge for Norris facing Verstappen’s “level of excellence”

McLaren lauds Norris’s growth and resilience, praising his maturity amidst the fierce competition against Max Verstappen’s dominant legacy in Formula 1.

Lando Norris has faced criticism from some quarters, with suggestions that he makes too many mistakes to truly challenge Max Verstappen. Detractors argue that Norris buckles under pressure. However, McLaren staunchly defends their British driver, with Andrea Stella noting Norris’s admirable conduct throughout the title race.

Though the title is all but decided, McLaren has witnessed Norris’s growth, proving he can handle the intense pressure. “Undoubtedly,” Stella confirmed to Formula1.com. “Lando is handling the demands of a championship fight in a way we can appreciate. He’s a driver of remarkable maturity.”

Norris Learns from Every Situation

Norris’s progression has been consistently upward throughout the season, a trajectory that McLaren values highly. “His attitude and his capacity to learn from every situation is something we observe and appreciate, race by race. I firmly believe Lando possesses the maturity needed to thrive in such high-stakes battles.” This is a general assessment, though the São Paulo Grand Prix all but confirmed this year’s title outcome.

Stella, however, remains aware of the monumental opponent Norris faces. “This is a battle against one of the greatest drivers in F1 history. There’s global recognition for Max Verstappen’s achievements and his world titles.”

McLaren Sticks to Its Path

McLaren’s team principal maintains focus on what they and Norris can control. “We constantly tell Lando: let’s keep doing what we’re doing, focusing on continual improvement, presenting our best selves, race after race.” For Norris, this doesn’t mean adopting a different approach to take on Verstappen. “Not at all. When I say we continue doing what we’re doing, I mean it broadly but also with very specific focus.”

Stella reflects on a tough moment that still stings: “For instance, the Austrian Grand Prix taught us a lesson. Those points lost due to a collision in Austria are ones we regret missing. There aren’t many other points we feel that way about this season.”

Norris Races by McLaren’s Values

The Italian team principal believes it’s not only the end results that matter but also how a driver conducts himself over the season. “Lando adheres to our values on the track. We race in a fair, honest manner.”
