Lando Norris’ dominant win in Singapore was nearly jeopardized twice by his daring maneuvers.
Although Lando Norris dominated the Singapore GP, he faced criticism from some former Formula 1 drivers.
“When you’re that far ahead, you should drive more relaxed,” stated Jan Lammers, who is also the boss of the Dutch GP.
“We remember what happened to Ayrton Senna in Monaco (in 1988). By attacking needlessly, he crashed and lost the victory.”
In fact, even McLaren CEO Zak Brown admitted that he had intervened directly on Sunday by contacting his driver via radio, asking him to stop making minor driving errors.
“Tired, happy, and tense,” he said when asked how he felt after the checkered flag. “Lando came close to the wall several times.”
“He asked over the radio if we had seen him hit the wall. I said ‘Yes, don’t do it again,'” Brown smiled. “But he drove brilliantly. He was flying.”
2016 World Champion Nico Rosberg warned Norris that if he couldn’t find a way to bring a dominant car to the finish line more calmly, he might foolishly lose the title.
“It’s very strange. Unusual. You’re so far ahead and you make three errors. Twice, it was so close to the wall that it was nearly over.”
“He brakes much too late and locks the front tire. It was nearly a broken front wing, and there goes the victory. It was a huge stroke of luck,”
“If he really wants to become world champion, he needs to get rid of this behavior in some way. I mean, if you have the same speed as the guy behind and a 30-second lead, it’s not the hardest thing to bring the car home.”
However, Lammers admitted that it can be dangerous for a driver to relax in the lead with such a big gap. “Especially if you’re good on these city circuits, you get into the rhythm.”
“Then, if you ease off the pressure, mistakes can happen. You suddenly become very aware of everything you’re doing. That’s why I think Lando was looking to have fun.”
