Norris deftly overcame a challenging start, transforming a fraught race into a strategic triumph.
Lando Norris must certainly have been frustrated to lose the advantage of his pole position at the start of the Dutch Grand Prix. However, given his qualifying pace, fear did not seem to permeate the McLaren F1 camp, despite spending the first stint behind Max Verstappen. Before his pit stop, the Brit took the lead and was untroubled by the Red Bull thereafter.
“It’s incredible. I wouldn’t say it was a perfect race because of the first lap, but apart from that, it was beautiful. The pace was strong, the car was incredible, and I managed to pass Max, which was the most important thing. From there, it was a smooth and very enjoyable race,” Norris stated.
When asked about the support from the orange-clad fans, the national color of the Netherlands and predominantly Verstappen supporters, Norris still praised the fans behind him: “We have so many fans here! I have a lot of Dutch supporters and I thank them even though I know some may be annoyed.”
Norris quickly emerged as a favourite in the race as he managed to keep up with Verstappen and then started to reel him in. The Brit revealed that he had thought about victory well before overtaking his rival of the day.
“Even earlier, from laps 5, 6, or 7. I expected Max to attack and pull away, but he didn’t. From there, I realized we were in a battle, and he lost time as my pace improved. Once I passed him, I was in clean air, and it was quite clear from then on.”
