McLaren Trails Ferrari, Mercedes in Monaco

McLaren F1’s Lando Norris remains upbeat despite trailing Ferrari and Mercedes in Monaco. The team faces tough competition but is determined to improve before qualifying.

McLaren F1 had a decent start to the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, with Lando Norris finishing in the top 5 at the end of the first day. The team is competitive against Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Red Bull, and the Briton is not concerned.

“First of all, it’s just fantastic to be back in Monaco and racing on this circuit. It’s simply amazing. It’s tough as always, but I think the first day was reasonable.”

“It’s always challenging to find a good rhythm on the streets of the Principality, but I think we’re in a good position. It’s very tight between several teams, with maybe one or two slightly ahead of us.”

“We have a bit of work to do, but I think it’s as expected, and we’ll keep pushing hard.”

Why Piastri Didn’t Run on Soft Tyres in FP2

Oscar Piastri was outside the top 10 at the end of the day, but he didn’t do a fast lap on soft tyres in the second free practice session, unlike the majority of drivers. He explains his first day in the Principality and the reasons for this choice.

“We ran a set of soft tyres in FP1, and we have a limited number of soft tyres for the weekend. At that time, there was a high chance of rain for FP2, so we wanted to use the softs earlier,” said the Australian, who doesn’t want to establish a hierarchy.

“It was a decent day. Ferrari is fast, Red Bull looks good, Mercedes is quick, so it’s very tight. But it was a good day. The circuit is cool, I’m happy with my driving even though I brushed the wall, so I’ll try not to do that again.”

“Honestly, we could be first or eighth. Even Aston looks good with Alonso, so we could be first or tenth. It’s very tight today, and everyone will want to improve their car for tomorrow, which will be exciting because it depends on the driver. We all have a fast car, and it will come down to who nails their lap.”
