McLaren F1 Surprised by Front Row Lockout at Monza

31/08/2024

McLaren F1 unexpectedly secures both front row spots at Monza, surprising the team and competitors alike.

Lando Norris clinched pole position, and the McLaren F1 driver himself was taken aback, given the close competition at Monza this Saturday. The Briton feared being overtaken as he was not satisfied with his second lap, yet he is delighted to see the team performing so well.

“It’s incredible to be on pole. Having both cars in first and second when the field is this tight is a surprise, but it’s fantastic. The team has done an incredible job. My lap wasn’t amazing, the first was very good in Q3 but not the second,” Norris remarked.

“As we’ve seen all weekend, it’s very close, there are many good drivers behind, and I’m not expecting an easy race tomorrow. There are many unknowns with the tyres, the asphalt, and the degradation. These are question marks, but I’m sure it will be exciting.”

Oscar Piastri is second and joins Norris on the front row. The Australian hoped to perform better and regrets a lap that lacked performance on his part, even though he relishes the outcome of these qualifiers for McLaren. However, he is under investigation for an unsafe release in front of Max Verstappen in the pits.

“The first lap of Q3 was good, the second wasn’t enough, as I’ve said too many times this year. But it’s a great performance for the team, the field is very tight, and there was no guarantee of locking the front row, so it’s an incredible effort,” Piastri stated, hopeful for a strong start tomorrow.

“Starting further forward than last week is a positive compared to last week, and starting second is not the worst here because the straight is long to the first corner. But the tyres are different from what they were in Monza, and with such a tight pack, it will be interesting.”
