Norris and Piastri Driven to Elevate McLaren's Prospects

McLaren F1 harbours potential and its drivers are keen to advance further

30/08/2024

McLaren F1 shows promise as Norris seeks gains and Piastri remains content.

McLaren F1 made a strong impression this Friday at Monza, clocking times close to the leaders in each session. Lando Norris was a mere three-thousandths of a second off the pace in FP2, and he remains optimistic about the weekend’s prospects, particularly noting the potential shown by his teammate.

“I struggled a bit today, probably more with the car in FP1 – just low grip, but I think that’s a common sentiment,” stated the British driver.

“However, the track conditions improved considerably for FP2, and I probably didn’t make as much progress as I should have. The car was quick, Oscar was very quick; he made a big mistake and probably lost around four or five tenths. He could have easily been first, so I have a bit of work to do.”

Norris anticipates a tight contest for pole position tomorrow among the four fastest teams: “These are just FP2 times, but I think we’re showing a bit more of our pace, and the others might not be. It’s close.”

“Between Ferrari, us, Red Bull, and I’m sure the Mercedes are very quick as well, it looks like it will certainly be eight cars in the mix this time. Eight cars that all seem fast, which should make for an exciting day tomorrow.”

Oscar Piastri, who finished fourth at the end of the first day, views Friday positively: “I’d say it’s been quite good. We need to tweak a few things but there’s potential, and I’m pleased.”

“The tyres have been an interesting point for everyone; I’m curious to see how they’ll perform over the weekend. Monza is different with the kerbs and resurfacing so getting used to it took some time, but overall, it’s been a solid Friday.”

“It was hot, but fortunately, Monza isn’t the most physically demanding circuit of the season, with long straights and plenty of fresh air. But it’s never fun when the tyres are this hot, even though it’s the same for everyone. It’s not the hottest we’ve had, but it’s enough!”
