Cadillac insists success comes with timing and insight, not marketing stunts, as it carefully selects the ideal Formula 1 driver.
Cadillac’s Formula 1 project is in no rush to name its first driver. Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports, the company behind the team, says they’re focused on making a smart, strategic choice rather than responding to speculation.
“The most important thing is we’re not rushing into a driver decision,” Towriss said. “There are a lot of factors involved when it comes to selecting a Formula 1 driver.”
While rumors continue to swirl around potential candidates, Towriss remains unfazed. “I wake up each day to news saying we’re deep into negotiations, and I get a kick out of it,” he joked. “But really, we’re taking our time. Our shortlist includes names people are already talking about.”
Among those mentioned are seasoned F1 racers like Sergio Pérez, Valtteri Bottas, and Guanyu Zhou. Towriss confirmed that Cadillac is prioritizing experience, especially for the early phase of the team’s F1 journey.
“Performance is one thing, but experience brings another layer,” he explained. “We’re starting from scratch. Feedback from the driver will be crucial — not just on track but in simulations too. This goes beyond pure racing skills.”
Cadillac’s leadership team, including motorsport veterans Graeme Lowdon and GM’s Eric Warren, is taking a data-driven approach to the selection process. “We’re gathering as much insight as possible. We want to be thorough and make the right call,” said Towriss. “There’s a lot of interest in our team, and we appreciate it.”
While many fans expect an American driver to headline the team, Towriss emphasized that timing is key. “We’re committed to having an American driver. That’s important to us. But it has to be done the right way.”
“It doesn’t have to happen in year one. We want the right person, at the right time, in the right situation,” he added. “This isn’t about filling a seat just to make headlines. We want that driver to succeed. The seat should be ready, respected, and competitive when the time comes.”
Cadillac is building its F1 journey step by step. For now, the focus is on preparation, not pressure.
