Pérez’s Silverstone ordeal ends in disaster, ranking second to last amidst mounting challenges.
Sergio Pérez endured another forgettable weekend at Silverstone. Qualifying 19th after an exit in Q1, he started from the pit lane and suffered from a poor decision when his team opted for intermediate tyres too early.
From there, his race was doomed, but his pace was particularly slow, as even a switch to soft tyres two laps from the end did not enable him to lap within a second of the times set by Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz, who were competing for the fastest lap in the final circuit.
“It was a total disaster, we got it wrong with the first decision, thinking there would be more rain. And after I stopped, I stayed on intermediates for six laps when it was completely dry, and I destroyed the tyres when the rain arrived,” Pérez stated.
“We were completely out of sync by six or seven laps, especially with the leaders. It ruined my race because at every stage, I was in the middle of the leaders, getting lapped, losing temperature in the tyres, this race was a nightmare.”
“I’m glad there’s a break coming up, we will regroup with the team, and the goal is clear, we want to return in form. We had a very positive Friday and we want to move on to Hungary which will be very important.”
The Hungarian Grand Prix’s significance could be pivotal in determining the Mexican’s future at Red Bull. Indeed, even though he says he does not want to be distracted by contract discussions, he also implies that he has only until the summer break to prove his worth.
“I know where I stand in terms of contract and such things. I cannot let that distract me. I need to focus on the next two weekends, which are the priority, and together, as a team, get through this tough period.”
