Sources suggest a Newey-Aston Martin F1 deal is near.
Numerous sources in the Monza paddock indicate that Aston Martin F1 will soon announce the team has secured the signature of Adrian Newey.
Since the renowned F1 technical “genius” decided to leave Red Bull this year, several rival teams have been desperately attempting to woo the 65-year-old.
Helping Newey sift through the offers is his long-time close friend and new manager, former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan, who stated, “Every Formula 1 team has spoken to us, and even two teams that are not currently on the starting grid.”
Ferrari was reportedly close to sealing a deal with Newey, but the engineer made excessive demands and was hesitant to relocate to Italy. At Monza, Jean Alesi, a close associate of the Scuderia, confirmed that Newey and Ferrari will not be joining forces this time.
Aston Martin F1, on the other hand, is said to have surprised the British designer with a lucrative offer that provides significant creative freedom. Will this be enough to persuade him?
“I think we are in the running with other teams to have him,” responded Aston Martin F1 team principal Mike Krack, smiling, at Monza.
“I read last week that another team had entered the fray, Alpine, and all this is part of the rumours, but I would be truly delighted if he finally joined our team,” said Fernando Alonso.
According to Alonso, Aston Martin F1 is in dire need of something new to halt the ongoing decline in performance of the Silverstone-based team since 2023.
“I’d rather have an updated floor or rear wing than a brain at the moment,” he joked, eliciting a hearty laugh from those present.
“The team is working hard to bring new parts to the upcoming races, but we are still waiting for that major improvement that will bring us closer to the top teams. We need to get better, we know it, we’re working on it, but yes, I think the current level is below the minimum required for us.”
When asked about the intensifying rumours surrounding Newey, the two-time champion remained tight-lipped.
“For me, it’s already a privilege that Aston Martin and Adrian Newey are linked. Just reading about that combination is a privilege. And I feel honoured to be part of Aston Martin.”
“If it happens one day, I’ll be happy, but I can’t dream or keep thinking about things that aren’t in the present.”
