Newey’s Future Aston Martin F1 Holds Cards Close

Aston Martin F1 Silent on Newey Rumour Buzz

22/06/2024

Aston Martin F1 refrains from confirming or denying the swirling rumours about Adrian Newey’s involvement.

Lawrence Stroll, owner of the Aston Martin team, recently admitted that “everyone” wants to sign a contract with the great Adrian Newey.

As Formula 1 headed to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix, information emerged that Newey, arguably the most respected designer in F1 history, had recently been given a private tour of Aston Martin’s new headquarters at Silverstone.

Rumours suggest that Newey has a lucrative and enticing offer from Ferrari on the table, and has informed Aston Martin that he would consider a deal for 25 million euros per year.

Team principal Mike Krack was also asked about the Newey rumours in Barcelona, and responded: “Seeing how many names have been linked to our project recently honours Lawrence’s vision.”

“I think it lends credibility to the project. Perhaps a few years ago, if we had linked these names to our team, nobody would have taken it seriously. So, I think we are flattered by this. It shows that the project is credible.”

Krack was asked to confirm if Aston Martin was in talks with Newey.

“No, I can neither confirm nor deny anything, obviously. You’ve already said it – rumours are rumours. A lot of people are talking about Aston Martin. That’s a good thing. We’ll see how it goes.”

Red Bull’s technical director will be free on April 1, 2025. This means he will have a say in the first car of another team under the new regulations starting in 2026.

The hope is that Newey’s genius can give a major advantage to a team aiming to be the dominant force under the regulations.

For now, Aston Martin’s on-track progress since early 2023 has stalled, while Mercedes has overtaken them.

“Interesting parallels, we started the season the same way they did,” continues Krack.

“They use tools similar to ours. That’s something for us to learn from. Lately, we have had a better understanding of our car.”

Krack downplayed the chances of his drivers Fernando Alonso or Lance Stroll this weekend in Barcelona.

“We are realistic. Coming here, we knew it would be one of the most challenging tracks for us. Because of what the track demands and the state of our car. The same goes for next week. We know that.”

“But we have seen that if conditions align, or if you make the right choices when others do not, you can score points.”
