Adrian Newey brings elite design expertise and relentless ambition to Aston Martin F1, aiming to reshape its future in Formula 1.
Adrian Newey joined Aston Martin F1 this winter as Technical Director, and he is present this weekend in Monaco for the first time under his new colours at a Grand Prix.
Andy Cowell, the team principal, revealed the two main assets their new chief engineer brings.
“I think he brings two things,” said Cowell. “Firstly, he brings experience in designing a complete car. There are not many people in the industry who have spent as much time as he has designing the architecture of entire cars under new regulations, so he has that experience.”
Newey Demands Relentless Precision
“He is also exceptionally competitive and obsessive. He is determined; he pushes things to such an extent that he says, ‘No, this is the fastest — let’s not have a high tolerance on this, let’s just aim for the quickest solution.’ So it’s those two things.”
Asked how the team is able to get the most out of Newey’s knowledge and experience, Cowell was very clear:
“Listen and act. I think for everything in life, it’s about listening to wise and experienced people and picking up the small bits of ideas, understanding the depth that surrounds them.”
“And then making sure 300 engineers understand them and follow. What really matters to me is ensuring we all learn from Adrian, that we don’t just follow instructions.”
Newey’s Schedule Remains Fluid
The number of races Newey will attend this season is not yet determined, as Cowell explained: “The home race is a natural one. I think we’ll take it race by race.”
“We’ll see what we think on Sunday evening and Monday morning, once we’ve had time to reflect. It will really depend on the journey towards 2025 and 2026, and we’ll be able to adapt.”
