Fernando Alonso admits time may be running out for his third F1 title. Meanwhile, Aston Martin anticipates Adrian Newey’s influence, with potential championship contention expected in 2027 at the earliest.
The Spaniard reveals he was so eager to see Adrian Newey join Aston Martin that he texted him, met with him, and even offered a portion of his own considerable salary to potentially boost the financial offer from team owner Lawrence Stroll.
However, with Newey joining the Silverstone-based team next March, Alonso admits that the Briton’s impact on the 2025 Aston Martin will be limited.
“I’d like to say yes, but honestly, I don’t think so.”
“I don’t think it’s really worth spending too much money on the 2025 season unless you’re fighting for the championship. So I think the 2026 project should be the first car he’ll have an influence on.”
And according to the team’s Commercial and Marketing Director, Jefferson Slack, 2026 is likely too soon for Aston Martin to fight for the championship.
“Newey will certainly help in 2026 to fight for wins, and I think in 2027 we’ll be fighting for world championships.”
Alonso, currently 43, will be 46 in mid-2027.
“Step by step, we’ll have everything in place to win that first race and, hopefully, fight for championships in the future.”
“But I’m aware it takes time, and I don’t really have that time.”
Alonso’s current long-term contract with Aston Martin only extends his driving role until the end of 2026.
“After 2026, I’ll be racing in Formula 1 or in other series. If I’m not driving in Formula 1, I’ll be with the Aston Martin team in some capacity. So I’ll enjoy that bright future, hopefully.”
