Eddie Jordan reveals why Newey chose Aston Martin, emphasizing the new challenges and responsibilities ahead.

The mystery surrounding Adrian Newey’s future is now resolved: the star F1 designer will indeed join Aston Martin F1 next year, where he faces the daunting task of turning the green team into an F1 winner.

It is known that Newey was also courted by Ferrari. In the end, he chose Aston Martin F1. But why this choice?

Eddie Jordan, Newey’s manager, is now free to speak. If Newey turned down Ferrari, was it because the Scuderia didn’t offer him full control as rumored?

“In my opinion, there are two very sensible and realistic reasons behind this. One of them is the position Newey finds himself in, which involves total control over the technical direction of the team, with a real responsibility he hasn’t really had before with other team directors and other shareholders and partners. That’s what’s being offered to him.”

“He is being offered a stake in the team, a position of total responsibility, control, and a partnership with Lawrence Stroll, which is clearly very different from what happened previously.”

“And so I can imagine and assume that Aston Martin F1 is a team that is perhaps very similar to what Red Bull was when he joined it 19 years ago. They were a top 5 team, just like Aston Martin. And it’s a team with a huge vision, a huge willingness from the owner, with Dietrich Mateschitz for Red Bull and, of course, Lawrence Stroll for Aston Martin F1.”

“In my opinion, the two are very similar types of people, individuals who are immensely successful, entrepreneurial, visionary, with a great mindset, passion, belief, and total devotion to what success is. And I think that’s what Adrian will bring to Aston Martin F1 in due time.”

Couldn’t Newey have also extended with Red Bull and stayed in Milton Keynes? For Eddie Jordan, the engineer was, however, drawn to the prospect of working with another F1 legend, be it Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso…

“The fact that he hadn’t yet worked with Lewis or Fernando was significant; he tried to see what would happen. Lewis is going to Ferrari. Of course, we had lengthy discussions with Ferrari, but Aston Martin and Fernando are ultimately the names that were chosen, to provide what Adrian would like to have—as a new challenge, if you will.”

Jordan also makes it clear: Adrian Newey aims to advance Aston Martin F1 as he did with Red Bull, moving it from mid-grid to the pinnacle of F1.

“He wanted to see how he could take a team from the top 5 to the front of the grid, just like with Red Bull previously.”

“And here’s a team that, in my opinion, is set to get moving. It will be interesting and exciting to see how things unfold.”

“And I must believe that in the future, this team will have the necessary opportunity and success for a private team like Aston Martin, under the hands of Lawrence Stroll, managed, controlled, and designed by Adrian Newey, to have the most incredible chance to become one of the great teams of the future.”
