Adrian Newey’s tumultuous Miami GP weekend set the stage for his unexpected departure, while Eddie Jordan lauded landmark negotiations with Red Bull.
Newey has experienced remarkable weeks recently at Red Bull. The engineer was on his way out during the Miami Grand Prix, where he was present in the Milton Keynes team’s garage. He recalls having endured a difficult weekend, merely responding to the press.
“The Miami Grand Prix itself was strange because I was there as a strategist, so on the pit wall, but I wasn’t involved in any technical decisions or meetings. I was just paraded around for the press, basically, and it wasn’t the most stimulating thing for me,” said Newey.
The engineer did not expect his transfer to become one of the most talked-about stories of the 2024 season: “But I never really thought it would be big news, to be quite honest, I never really gave it much thought. So the fact that it was in all the papers, on TV, and all that, was a bit of a shock.”
Eddie Jordan, who managed Newey’s affairs, takes pride in the quality of the negotiations surrounding the engineer’s departure from Red Bull: “I talk a lot. I’m Irish. The Irish talk a lot. But when there’s money on the line and you need to be silent, you do it. Without fail.”
“If I’m being very honest, in my life, I haven’t told many people this, but in my life, I’ve done some really, really scary deals, some that worked out, some that didn’t. But I truly believe the negotiations I had with Red Bull were the best, and of the highest caliber.”
“They were incredibly fair people to deal with. They understood exactly the situation, the reason I was talking to them, and Adrian’s position, having been there for 18 years, being a great servant to them.”
“He’s won dozens of world championships there, but it’s probably one of the best deals I’ve made in my life, not financially, but mentally. I felt very good about how it was structured.”
