F1 legend Montoya urges Mercedes to unite Verstappen and Russell for 2026, calling it the only path to future dominance.
Juan Pablo Montoya, a seven-time Grand Prix winner, has outlined a bold scenario for Mercedes: sign Max Verstappen and keep George Russell, if he’s willing to stay.
Like many in the paddock, Montoya believes Mercedes won’t pass up the chance to land Max Verstappen if the opportunity arises. In that case, the ball would be in Russell’s court: accept the challenge or walk away. The driver most likely to lose out? Rising star Kimi Antonelli, at least in the short term.

Toto’s Choice: Max In, George Must Decide

Toto Wolff could sign Verstappen, but Russell must accept the challenge or walk away. Montoya says that’s Mercedes’ best play.
“I think Toto would sit down with George Russell and say, ‘I want you to stay. But we’re signing Max. If you’re comfortable racing and working alongside him, the seat is yours. If not, the door is open,’” Montoya said.
“That’s the future I see. Mercedes should aim for a Verstappen, Russell pairing. Antonelli will get a seat somewhere else, Mercedes will find a place for him. I just don’t know where, and options are limited.”
Montoya is convinced Mercedes won’t hesitate if Verstappen becomes available.
“It’s not just about signing Max. It’s also about shaking up the game. If you take Max away from Red Bull, what’s left? Three drivers who aren’t finishing on the podium or scoring big points.”
