Red Bull is focused on closing the performance gap to McLaren, with Monaghan revealing their detailed approach for improved results.
Red Bull has a clear vision of how they intend to progress in the upcoming Grands Prix. Paul Monaghan, the team’s Engineering Director, has shared the action plan and development goals for the RB21, aiming to get the car back in the race with the competition.
“Not necessarily,” Monaghan responded when asked if there is a potential conflict between making the car easier to drive and the drivers’ feedback. “The car’s nervousness might be relative. I bet there are 18 other cars in the pit lane that we’d all find quite difficult to drive.”
“We’re trying to balance the car as best we can, and we’re just a couple of tenths off the fastest car on the grid. Last year’s car had a few flaws, but we’ve made significant improvements without overdoing it, in my opinion.”
“Now, our focus is to make this car a bit better. If we’re two-tenths behind on a 5.5-kilometer circuit with 20 turns, and we manage to find a few hundredths in each corner, we could suddenly match the pace of the front-runners.”
“But it’s still challenging. Now, we just need to find a bit more speed with this car, working to improve its stability so that the drivers find it easier to handle. If we can do that and gain time per lap, everything will fall into place. We’ll be right in the mix.”
Max Verstappen also explained why he called for an emergency meeting within the team before the Japanese Grand Prix. He emphasized that he wasn’t trying to take charge but simply raising concerns: “The goal is to highlight the areas where I think we can improve.”
“In the end, I’m not the expert in solving the issues. I can only share what I feel in the car. Ultimately, it’s up to the others to find the solutions. And that takes time.”
Even though Verstappen requested an urgent meeting before Japan, he denied any dramatic outburst: “No, I’m not like that, unless someone really annoys me. I don’t think it’s necessary either. It’s about naming things constructively and working through them.”
