Mercedes F1’s Monaco race hopes were dashed by a red flag, leaving Russell and Hamilton unable to improve their positions.
Mercedes F1 finished in 5th and 7th places at the Monaco Grand Prix, with strategies rendered nearly impossible to execute after the first-lap red flag, which allowed a free tyre change.
George Russell ended up in the same position he started, managing a controlled pace far behind the top four on his medium tyres.
“When the red flag came out, it was frustrating for everyone. The only hope for a good race in Monaco was a bit of excitement with the strategy, but that was ruined by the red flag. We got the maximum we could,” Russell shared.
“It was a long race, perhaps old-fashioned, a strange race. The first 30 laps, we were really running at a false pace.”
“When Max pitted, I put my foot down and only then did I realize how much we had closed the gap to the Ferraris and McLarens. I was really pleased with that.”
“Max put a bit of pressure on me, but it was mostly under control.”
7th behind Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton is looking to take the positives from this race forward.
“The performance signs this weekend were encouraging, and for three consecutive races, we have made improvements.”
“It’s really positive to see, bit by bit, we have good signs appearing and I hope that at the next race, I’ll have the upgraded front wing like George.”
“Nothing to say about the race, it was the expected procession after the red flag ruined all the strategies.”
“I’m going to Canada and, as always, will give it my all, and it’s good to see the team bringing performance.”
