A dramatic crash at the Monaco GP involving Perez and the Haas team led to a red flag stoppage. Cleanup efforts are underway.
The Monaco Grand Prix was halted with a red flag following a frightening crash at the back of the pack.
Charles Leclerc got off to an excellent start, maintaining the lead, while Carlos Sainz moved alongside Oscar Piastri at the first corner. However, the two touched, and Sainz’s Ferrari cut its tire on the McLaren’s floor.
Sainz went straight on at Massenet, leaving the two McLarens behind Leclerc. Behind them, there was a massive crash involving Sergio Pérez and the two Haas cars. Kevin Magnussen found himself sandwiched between the Red Bull and the barrier on the uphill climb, sending both cars spinning and taking Nico Hülkenberg with them.
The Red Bull was destroyed, but Pérez is fine, as are the Haas drivers. The red flag was deployed, but there is a lot of debris to clear and damaged barriers to repair. Another standing start will take place, but it will take time to make the track safe again.
Notably, the two Alpine F1 drivers also collided at Portier, provoking the ire of Pierre Gasly (see second video).
It remains to be seen what the red flag conditions will allow in terms of a new start for each driver.
