Charles Leclerc realizes his childhood dream by clinching victories at the iconic Monaco and Monza circuits.
Charles Leclerc reflected on his victory at Monza after stepping off the podium, reaffirming that winning in Italy as a Ferrari driver, especially amidst the sea of tifosi below, is an exceptional feeling.
“It’s the usual unique sensations,” Leclerc told Canal+. “Monaco and Monza are the two races that have captivated me since childhood. If I could choose any two, they would be beyond my wildest dreams.”
“However, a season is much more than just two races. It has had its ups and downs, but as a team, we have worked well in recent races, bringing developments that have helped us secure wins.”
The Monegasque confirmed that a one-stop strategy was indeed Ferrari’s initial plan, and he only feared his tyres wouldn’t last when he saw the graining Red Bull experienced on the hard tyres.
“Honestly, it was our basic strategy. But we saw early on that Red Bull was experiencing significant graining and switched to a two-stop strategy, so we thought that might be better.”
“But I managed to do a good job by staying behind Norris and saving the front tyres because they were our limiting factor. When Norris pitted, I pushed, and we started catching Piastri as he was struggling with his left front.”
“I knew I had to perform well to have the freedom to do what we wanted. And when he pitted, I had much more grip. I was struggling with him in front, but it improved significantly when he wasn’t there, and I managed to regain performance, and we controlled it until the end.”
Leclerc also faced the risk of losing concentration towards the end of the race as the fans grew louder, cheering him on as he fended off Piastri to edge closer to victory.
“It wasn’t easy, but as usual, it’s hard to stay focused at Monza because there’s always so much happening in the stands. But we did a good job, and I’m very pleased to win again at Monza.”
