Mattia Binotto defends Audi’s decision to sign Gabriel Bortoleto over Mick Schumacher, ending speculation on Schumacher’s potential 2025 F1 return.
Audi F1 chief Mattia Binotto defended his decision not to hire Mick Schumacher for a 2025 seat.
After months of speculation, Audi F1—set to rebrand the existing Sauber/Stake F1 team in 2026—confirmed on Wednesday that Schumacher was not in its plans, instead signing F2 championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto under a multi-year contract.
This effectively ended Schumacher’s hopes of returning to the Formula 1 grid in 2025, perhaps permanently.
The German had been considered by Binotto, who knew him well, having supported him through the Ferrari Academy and later facilitated his entry with Haas F1.
“Yes, Mick was considered for an Audi F1 seat. We had several discussions, and he was certainly a strong candidate.”
“I know him very well from the past, and I know his strengths and perhaps also his weaknesses, but I certainly believe he would have been a good choice. There were many candidates, and Mick certainly would have been a good choice as well.”
“Sometimes, a decision has to be made. I think there’s no reason for criticism; the reason is simply that we chose Gabriel, and that’s all.”
“And I think perhaps we should ask Toto Wolff the same: why Kimi (Antonelli) and not Mick?”
“I think, at some point, a decision must be made. We made the decision to hire Gabriel, and we’re happy with it.”
Schumacher is now expected to re-sign with Alpine for its World Endurance Championship program after returning to competition with the French manufacturer this year.
And if Valtteri Bottas takes on a reserve driver role at Mercedes F1, it’s unlikely Schumacher will continue.
